The local custom, which is called "тричане" (trichane), was held over the four-day weekend during which Bulgaria celebrated its 133 years of independence from the Ottoman empire.
The dogs are "hanged" with a rope, tied across the chest and then pulled over the river. The rope is then twisted repeatedly and the dogs would spin madly on their way down to the water, after which they would get loose and hit the river. From the spinning, the dogs are often disoriented, and sometimes they would drown in the process.
The ritual is meant to cleanse the village of evil spirits.
Brodilovo mayor Petko Arnaoudov banned the ritual in 2006, and until this weekend the order was obeyed, and no ritual hangings were made since. But recently, this part of Bulgaria has been suffering from "evil" in the form of foot-and-mouth disease outbreak which struck in the area for the first time in 12 years.
